Using any modern web browser, you can setup user accounts, Apache, DNS, file sharing and much more. Webmin removes the need to manually edit Unix configuration files like /etc/passwd, and lets you manage a system from the console or remotely.

YunoHost

YunoHost bills itself as a “server operating system aiming to make self-hosting accessible to everyone.” It’s not meant to be as comprehensive as cPanel or Webmin, as it’s only goal is to install various self-hosted applications for you. You won’t find firewall management or reverse proxies here, only a number of officially-supported “apps” for installing various programs, such as Baikal, Nextcloud, WordPress, Zerobin, and more.

You can administer your VPS via the YunoHost web interface or the command line. YunoHost officially supports Debian 8 and is coded primarily in Python under an open source GPL license. The code is available on GitHub.

Froxlor

Froxlor bills itself as the “lightweight” alternative to Webmin. From their website: “Developed by experienced server administrators, this open source (GPL) panel simplifies the effort of managing your hosting platform.” Features include Let’s Encrypt installation, PHP configuration, MySQL management, and more.

Froxlor has Debian packages available and a .tar.gz for production installations. Only Debian is officially supported, but it seems possible, with a little effort, to install it on Ubuntu as well. Froxlor is licensed under GPL 2.0, with source code on GitHub.

  1. It’s always nice to see an article about alternate web hosting control panels to cPanel, because I am not a fan of cPanel. However, I think that you missed one of the best alternatives of the bunch. The InterWorx control panel is easy to use, scalable, and good for clustering. The support staff is great and they are always working to improve their product. Alternatives like Kloxo and Webmin are nice, but they can’t compete with a paid panel like InterWorx.

    • Hello Justin, I found server pilot cp interesting. Before I was a kloxo user, It’s not bad to run small sites but eventually when my sites grow up it somehow fails. I have to manually manage all the configs like apache/nginx, php-fpm etc & most of the time it fails to utilize all the server hardware and often get locked down. So my question is does this cpanel (serverpilot) manages to overcome this problems? Like maintaining a good configuration according to server hardware etc? Share with us your experience.

      Thanks
      Anik

  2. Word from the burned. ZPanel is no longer supported and the its replacement, Sentora just ate it’s own MySQL database forcing a complete VPS rebuild. Apparently, there are no fixes, it just happens. The developers are aware, but the fix is you must create a clean VPS, and start over. Unless you have a lot of free time, avoid.

  3. What about Vesta, Vesta is a new contender for sure so far the best one i have seen. Vesta CP is definitely the best choice, easy to install and also has great performance, I love that it uses Nginx and also SpamAssassin and fail2ban. That makes for a more secure installation, and the control panel is clean and easy to manage I wrote a small tutorial on how to install with these features here Note: this is for Ubuntu 14.04 but should work for most Linux distributions.

    • The thing I don’t like about Vesta CP is that you have to pay for a file manager ($3/month or $50 for a lifetime license). Of course it’s possible to transfer files via ftp or from the command line in ssh, but a free control panel file server would be helpful.
